One of Japan’s most unique and exciting cultural events is the matsuri (祭), or festival. Most matsuri come from Shinto and are centered around the local shrines and their kami (神), the spirits or deities of the Shinto religion.

Japan has hundreds of unique matsuri, and Kumamoto is no exception. Check out the map below to see where and when the next exciting festival will be!

Note: For an event description, click on the icon. We’ve included both traditional matsuri as well as local cultural events, such as art shows and film  festivals. The map layers break down the festivals and the icons are color-coded by month to help you plan your adventure!  As always, this is a work in progress, so thank you for your patience as we continue to update the map!
