This year’s been snazzy. More is on the way!

With 2017 nearing its end, we’d like to take a moment to look back at all of the fun events we’ve done so far, and give you a preview of what’s coming next!

The next big event you can look forward to is Pub Quiz 2017, a KumAJET tradition. Look forward to a detailed post soon!

Oogie Boogie + Shimatori = Halloween Perfection

KumAJET’s Halloween Event this year is Oogie Boogie Night! This is an all-you-can-drink event for JETs and locals to get together as a warm-up to one of Kumamoto City’s most awesome nights for Halloween!

Shimatori, Kumamoto City’s shopping arcade and major hub for city nightlife, fills with people dressed in Halloween costumes. And Halloween costumes in Japan are doubly awesome because it’s a combo of traditional Halloween fare and some epic cosplay.

Halloween is gaining more momentum in Japan, so it’s really awesome to see so many people come out in Kumamoto to celebrate the holiday!

KumAJET wants you to join in on the fun! Oogie Boogie Night sets the stage – drink up and get your snack on at food bar JOHN ROE! Come in costume, compete in our awesome contest for prizes, and then join the hundreds of others parading in their finest throughout Shimatori!

Here are some photos of the costumes from last year’s Halloween at Shimatori, featuring some of your fabulous KumAJET team (Bilal, Chiri, Joyce, and Olivia)!

Oogie Boogie Night Awaits!

You can’t boogie without some Oogie.

Are you ready to split some seams? Shake in your shoes? How about you snack on a batch of snake and spider stew?

Kumamoto guys and ghouls are invited to food bar JOHN ROE in Kumamoto City to celebrate Halloween this year, KumAJET-style! Reunite with the friends you’ve made on JET, make new friends with the Kumamoto locals, chit-chat, get down, and dig in to some otsumami!

The highlight of the night will include a Halloween Costume Contest where we will award prizes through a ballot system for the Cutest Costume, Scariest Costume, and the Most Creative. While you do not have to dress up to attend this event, we encourage you to dive into the spirit of Halloween and get dolled up.

While party time is drawing near, rest easy–you still have some time to throw something together for the party! Do you need some ideas for what to wear? What can you do that’s simple, cheap, and creative?

Check out these tips from PopSugar,  Woman’s Day, and Buzzfeed for costume inspiration. You can also scope out your local 100-yen shops (like Daiso, Seria, or Watts) for affordable costume pieces and makeup. Amazon Japan’s also got some decent deals at their Halloween Store if you want to go all fancy-schmancy.  No matter what, have fun with it!

🦇Mark your calendars for October 28 at 7:30pm and read more about KumAJET’s event here.🦇

How do I RSVP?

Email KumAJET to let us know that you will attend, then hop over to the Group Facebook page and mark yourself as “Going.” (If you don’t have Facebook, no worries! Just shoot us an email at to let us know what’s what).

How much does it cost?

1600 yen gets you all-you-can drink with otsumami, the delightful Japanese snacks often served with beer. Please note, otsumami is snack food, not dinner, so if you’re looking for an actual meal, please load up before you come to the party.

What should I bring?

  • Costumes are optional, but definitely encouraged!
