KumAJET welcomes you!

Welcome incoming JETS to Kumamoto Prefecture, and a warm hello to JETs continuing their journey in Japan! KumAJET is recruiting new members for the 2018/2019 season! We would love your help and support.

KumAJET is a part of the Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching (AJET).  KumAJET’s specific goal is to bring JETs and members of the local community together through social activities and charity work. KumAJET members are all volunteers who help when they can, however they can. When we do charity fundraisers,  100% of our proceeds go to organizations like Jiaien Orphanage in Kumamoto City. When we hold special events, any surplus money from admission fees goes back into KumAJET funds to pay for our future events.

Check out our year in review to get a taste of what we do, and if you are interested in joining KumAJET, you can contact current members of KumAJET through our public Facebook group page or send us an email. Our tentative recruitment deadline is July 1, 2018. Fill out your application here!

KumAJET Year in Review: 2017-2018 Season

KUMAMOTO ORIENTATION – KumAJET makes a brief appearance to introduce the organization to the new JETS and to drum up interest in our yearly events, starting with our famous Ashikita Beach Party.

ASHIKITA BEACH PARTY – As KumAJET’s most popular event of the year, JETs old and new head south to Ashikita for an overnight camping trip at the beach. We rent out cabins, play water sports, have a barbecue, and more!

KUMAFEST – A brand-new event where we rented out the famous Aspecta Ampitheater in Aso for a weekend chock-full of slip n’slide, music, camping, cookouts, and stargazing.

OOGIE BOOGIE NIGHT – Our Halloween even started at Food Bar JOHN ROE and ended with the parade of costumes through Kumamoto City’s famous Shimatori, where hundreds of costumed residents strutted their stuff to celebrate the Halloween spirit.

KUMAJET GOES TO SANC – This is a busy time of year for JETs, with tests, contests, and English camps, so our event at Bar Sanctuary in Kumamoto City was the perfect way to de-stress and have a good time with drinks, dancing, and karaoke.

PUB QUIZ – another famous KumAJET tradition at Beer Restaurant ODEN in Kumamoto City. Three to six teams work together to answer questions in five categories created by KumAJETS. Players decide together and write down their answers. The top group wins prizes provided by KumAJET!

SDC BOOK & BAKE SALE – the Skills Development Conference (SDC) is where ALTs and JTEs participate in educational panels and workshops. During this two-day event, KumAJET sells used books and movies at a minimum 100-yen donation. We also sell baked goods and hold a charity auction of higher-valued items. 100% of our proceeds went to Jiaien Orphanage in Kumamoto City. This year, we raised 300,000 yen.

CHRISTMAS AT JIAIEN – KumAJET has a long tradition of supporting Jiaien Orphanage, and this includes doing fun activities with the kids every Christmas. This year, JETs and other volunteers joined 30 children for a two-hour Christmas party where they decorated the Christmas tree, decorated gingerbread cookies, made Christmas cards, and played games like musical chairs and pass the parcel.

ROUND ONE SOUND FUN? – KumAJET’s quick little sojourn to Round One, an indoor sports and multi-entertainment complex in Kumamoto City.

KUMA ROYALE – every winter KumAJET holds a semi-formal event, and this year we went a little Bond…James Bond at Redline in Kumamoto City. With food, drinks, games, and dancing, a fun night was had for those who dared to accept the mission.

ALL-KYUSHU HANAMI – Hanami refers to the traditional viewing of the cherry blossoms all over Japan. In this second annual event, JETs from across all eight prefectures in Kyushu and Okinawa joined together at Ninomaru Park next to Kumamoto Castle, followed by an after-party at Irish Pub Celts.

CHARITY BOOK SALE AT ENGLISH MARKET VOL. 2- English Market is a community event sponsored by the cafe COMMUNE 6, where artisans and vendors sell their goods with the goal of communicating only in English. Jewelry-makers, musicians, massage therapists, chocolatiers, crafters, and many others appeared at the event along with members of KumAJET. We sold books and DVDs leftover from the SDC book sale, and 100% of our proceeds went to Jiaien Orphanage – 8,500 yen. We also joined the flash mob to sing “Seasons of Love” from RENT!

KUMAFEST 2 – The first Kumafest was so successful, we decided to go another round at Aspecta Amphitheater. Check out Chris Ott’s video of beautiful Aso and where campers started getting set up for the event!

June and July

KUMAJET RECRUITMENT – Every year KumAJET changes hands, welcoming fresh faces and fresh ideas into our group. Come be a part of the fun! Fill out your application to join here!

KUMAMOTO SPORTS GROUP – A coed team of JETS and non-JETS of all skill levels and ages who are interested in playing sports, particularly touch rugby and and American flag football (turf and beach). We welcome everyone who is interested, whether you have experience playing or not.  Not only do we play, but we travel all over Kyushu to watch tournaments (and go for convenient Costco runs 😄). If you are interested in joining up, contact Greg Rammit through the public KumAJET Facebook page.

Thanks for checking out our year in review! We’re proud of our fun-filled events that bring the community together, and we can’t do it without you. Please consider joining KumAJET.

In the meantime, we’ll see you in August at Kumamoto Orientation to welcome you to Japan!
